re: launching evolution as su and as me
 

Hello All:

After dwelling on it for a while (I can't send messages w/ evolution as me (I get an error message about authentication method being PLAIN even though I've reset it to POP before SMTP about a thousand times)) I thought I'd try to launch evolution as su, and lo and behold it works fine.
Is there a way for me to launch and use this app w/out having to change to su?
I'd rather stay as far as possible from su if I am able.

One idea: Try creating a new user account and test if the evoluton works correctly then. If so, the problem is not 'you' vs. 'root', but 'you' vs. 'anOtherUser', meaning that probably some configs in your home directory are corrupted (~/.evolution/ perhaps); fix or delete them.

The new account's already been deleted. I tried that a few days ago.
When I first configured evolution I chose "plain" as the smtp authentication method. After calling my isp I reconfigged, and reconfigged.... and here I am.

Hmm.. I have never used evolution (happy mutt hacker), so I can't fix the original problem, sorry. Thus, you can circumvent the problem by configuring fetchmail to constantly pick your mail and take care of that your smtp account keeps open.

Well, that doesn't really solve my problem w/ evolution.
I downloaded it and would like to use it.

The quick hack I proposed doesn't prevent you from using evolution, it just fixes the problem of not having a working 'pop before smtp' authentication.

Yes, but evolution is to be the all-in-one-basket app for email and newsgroups and collateral stuff.
Is fetchmail part of evolution or is your suggestion a workaround for receiving mail outside of evolution?

I don't want to go somewhere else for receiving mail: I'd rather use the one app for everything, and keep things simple. Hence the posting.

You can use fetchmail to download your messages into your mail spool. You'd then configure evolution to (insted of POP) use a local mbox account. I think what he's suggesting is that you use a sort of inbetween "grabber" program to make sure that your lease for sending messages on the SMTP server stays open.

Its a small bit of a hack/workaround, but it keeps you using evolution.

And evolution just issued a new release!!
I'm thinking of uninstalling what I've got since my box has to "wear" a simian desktop. It's a little irksome; I'm surprised that I feel put-upon.

But I don't know how to uninstall.
How do I uniinstall simian evolution?

In debian, apt-get remove evolution

In RH (via RPM), do
rpm -qa | grep evolution
rpm -e [relevant evolution rpm]

I've got RH 7.3, and it was installed by self-installing script. I basically just clicked on the "next" tab several times.

Then I'd suggest using the redhat instructions I provided in #10.

If that doens't work let us know.

EDIT: A selft-installing script from Ximian or from RedHat? You might check in your install dir (if you still have it) to see if there's a corresponding uninstall script.
