Hello,

Am a newbie, before, my colleague helped me configure Xserver/KDE/KDM and it would start automatically whenever i would use linux, but now my debian machine cant start the graphical view i.e kde.

I have tried;

#startx

But i get errors;

X: cannot stat /tmp/.x11-unix (No such file or directory), aborting.
giving up.
> xinit: Connection refused (errno 111): unable to connect to X server
> xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.

What am sure of is that KDm is already running.

Could you post your log from kdm? /var/log/kdm.log

It seems something is locked. I even tried to #apt-get update and at the end it wouldnt finish as again something was locked.

You can't run the log file, you have to read it
cat /var/log/kdm.log
If you still get premission denied, try to use sudo:
sudo cat /etc/log/kdm.log

hi.

i don't use KDE and i don't use your distribution (i'm under ubuntu) but i had the same problem.

to solve it i did it (i can be a little bit dangerous i think but it success for me) :

$ cd /
$ sudo rm -Rf /tmp/
$ sudo mkdir /tmp/
$ sudo chmod 777 /tmp/

then to test it :

$ startx

i think you had missed your x.conf file. Did you modify your system before?

for me it was a crash due to a flash video.
