re-install xubuntu
Hi,
Think I have a trojan problem, my question is, can I uninstall xubuntu - and how to do that, - install it again with another, better password ? Have a stick with OS. thanks for your help, miramarcos |
Can you explain why you think you have a trojan problem? It is highly unlikely that you really do have one. What symptoms are you experiencing? Please give a much detail as possible. In order to help you we need to know what's going on.

uninstalling Xubunti
Dear jdkaye,
My Acer one cannot update anymore (only partially) and some websites I visit take a long time to respond, which wasn't the case earlier. Have a firewall installed. If you need more info, pls. let me know. |
It is not a trojan perhpas the partial upgrade is due to an outdate PPA you had previously added to your system?

I'll bet that its an old, out of support release. Probably 10.04, since its getting some updates (10.04 is out of support for desktop use, but the server version is still supported).
Post the result of- cat /etc/*-release That wil tell us what version of ubuntu you are running. |
Xubuntu
Dear all,
This OS is 10.04.2, but whenn I try to install the update, the following message comes up : 'upgrade aborted, pls. check your internet connections or installation media and try again'. Have no problem with internet connection and have installed in 2011 with a USB ISO stick. Also no have socalled PPA's installed. Pls. advise what to do, don't like the red round traffic sign with white stripe in my screen. I'm not using a desktop, but an Acer aspire one. miramarcos |
Updates for that version are no longer available. You can download Xubuntu 13.10 and do a fresh install. Then keep your eyes open for Xubuntu 14.04 and upgrade as soon as become available because that will be the next Long Term Supported version (LTS).
Or if you like the version you currently have just use it the way it is and ignore the update. You will have to make that call though. Good luck to you |
install Ubuntu 13.10
Dear All,

install Ubuntu
Thank you for your reply, but this OS is on a only Linux PC Acer laptop installed. Guess I have to make a bootable flash pen. Have already downloaded the iso version ubuntu 13.10.

Yeah you need to make a bootable drive then you can re install the OS. Make sure you copy whatever file you want to keep on to an external drive because the re install process will format the hard drive in your computer wiping everything.
You can bring up the update manager in Xubuntu to see if it says something about a new version being available for your computer you can do the upgrade that way too. If there is nothing then fresh install is the only way to go. If you go with the fresh install, during installation you will get to the partitioning step select something else. there create 3 partition one with 20GB format it with ext4 format mount it on / another partition 2GB of size format it as swap, and whatever is left format it with ext4 format mount it on /home So next time you have to re install just replace the root partition.
