Angry re: editing files

ok sorry if this question is really obvious, but I'm having a tough time with it. I have mandrake 8.1 installed on my system, and I just finished downloading a couple of text files. I need to edit those files and resave them, but it says I don't have permission to do so. I don't understand? I'm the only user set up to use that computer.
I read something about not being the owner of the file, and not being able to do anything but read it unless you're the owner. Surely that can't be the case since this file was meant to be manipulated.

Please Help,
Thanks,
M

do a ls -al filename.txt and see what the permissions are on the file or files..
they should have at least -rw-r--r-- to be able to write to the file..

man chmod for details on permissions of files..
