(Re)compile Kernel2.4.X on SuSe8.2 for MADWiFi

Hi
I am just getting myself a new wlan card (Proxim Orinoco 11b/g - Atheros)
a friend of mine got the card and I tried it in uni today. He is using the madwifi drivers, I managed to compile them but could not modprobe them - here the excerp of the error from the faq:
Quote:

4.8 The drivers compile fine, but I get "unresolved symbol" errors on modprobe - This generally means that your kernel was built with CONFIG_MODVERSIONS set, but the madwifi modules got compiled with different options. Rebuild your kernel with it disabled, hopefully that will fix it.)
Currently I am using SuSe 8.2 with a 2.4.20 (i think) kernel
They tried to install the newest kernel - 2.6.4 (i think again) it worked so far, I can boot from it, only I get several errors from modules and programms like
Quote:

at, cron, kdm,pcmcia, sound, ...
but I can modprobe the drivers

So my question is how to either recompile my exsiting 2.4 kernel without the CONFIG_MODVERSIONS set (or a work round to load the drivers)
or how I fix my module problem with the new kernel.

I now how to use the normal everyday linux but how to resolve these kind of modul and kernel problems is yet beyond me.

Thanks for your help.

Any comments on ArchLinux by the way? As I want to try it as soon as I have time
