Random hangs during bootup

I recently installed Knoppix 3.4 on my Toshiba laptop and have been encountering intermittent hangs during boot up. It always takes place after a line stating that ACPI modules being loaded with ToshibaACPI module and before another line stating that the pcmia manager has started. The system just stops totally with no error message.

What could be the problem?

Give as boot option in the start-up screen:
knoppix acpi=off

if this does not help then:

knoppix failsafe
