Ram not recognized

Box is Gateway FX 6800 01e with i7 920 proc. It came with 3GB DDR3 ram. I added another 6GB and I was careful to match type and speed. Machine is dual boot WinVista/PCLinuxOS. Linux recognizes 3GB while WinVista recognises 9GB. How do I start to figure out why this is happening?

Best to use a 64-bit distro, else you'll have to check the HIGHMEM settings in the kernel config.

Home dir saved to Vista hdd. How do I get into kernel config, please?

Never used that distro, but see if there is a config* file in /boot. Else see if /proc/config.gz exists - use grep on the former, zgrep on the latter.

use a 64 bit OS

Hi,

Just as John VV said, use a 64bit OS or if you 'need/want' to stick with a 32bit OS because of software you have to use, then compile your kernel with PAE support.

Kind regards,

Eric
