It would help to know what operating system you are using and if wpa is involved.
Linux drivers for rt2500 prior to the 2.6.27 kernels had a problem with wpa encryption. Ever since, they, mostly work. From a quick looksee on the Verizon card, it comes with wpa as default and this could be the problem.
Newer distros should handle the rt2500 and wpa out-of-box in most cases but not all will. Wpa_supplicant and network managers also have roles.
Ndiswrapper with windows drivers is often the best solution.
