Radeon Sapphire graphics card errors with startx
I didn't know if this should go under hardware or software because I'm pretty sure it's a driver issue so I decided to just put it here.
This is my first time using Linux. I have it set to double-boot to Windows 7 or Slackware.
Whenever I try to run startx I get 3 errors and a fatal error:
Error:
"Failed to load module 'fbdev' (module does not exist, 0)"
"RADEON(0): Chipset: 'AMD RADEON HD 6900 Series' (ChipID = 0x6719) requires KMS"
"Screen(s) found, but none have a useable configuration."
Fatal Error:
"no screens found" (Direct contradiction?)
Also, there was this information:
"[KMS] drm report modesetting isn't supported"
Can anyone help me figure out what I need to do?

I assume that you use Slackware 13.37. This version is to old, so that the pre-installed free drivers don't work with your videocard (I had the same problem with my HD6870). I would recommend to install the proprietary AMD drivers.
To do that log in as root and launch the following commands:
Code:
wget -c http://www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/amd-driver-installer-12-6-x86.x86_64.run
This will download the driver. To install it use
Code:
bash amd-driver-installer-12-6-x86.x86_64.run
and follow the onscreen instructions. Then you have to create an initial configuration:
Code:
amdconfig --initial
If you now reboot and use startx again it should work.

Okay, I'm downloading it now (I'm very thankful) but while it was downloading the computer fell asleep so I pressed a key to wake it up. Immediately it duplicated the download bar. Confusion and a bit of panic followed and now I have 7 loading bars. Is this going to be a problem?

Now, that is just a minor glitch that happens when pressing a key, nothing to worry about.

I know I'm being a bit of trouble and really appreciate the help.
I was downloading it but it said it would take about 24 hours. I thought if I left it, it might come up with a lower estimate given time. Because it didn't I figured I must need drivers for the motherboard. I have an Asus P8Z68-V XL motherboard with Realtek 8111E Gigabit LAn. I did some searching and found some drivers here: http://www.realtek.com/downloads/dow...etDown=false#2 . I saved one to my laptop (which I'm currently on). How can I get it onto my desktop? Also, it's a .bz2 file.

I have the same network chip on my ASUS M5A99X Evo and it worked out of the box with reasonable speed, so I doubt that this is a driver problem.

Well, I know on the windows OS it was able to download the drivers much faster so I don't know what else would cause this.
I just restarted the install again and now it's already faster. I guess it was just a one time thing.
Spoke too soon. It's back to it's old pace. Are you sure it doesn't need a driver for the LAN?

I download the driver using windows, moved it to a flash-drive and downloaded off that, everything's prefect now, thanks!
