Radeon PCI Problem

Hello. I just installed Mandrake 9.0. I have 2 video cards: an integrated Intel card, and an ATI Radeon PCI graphics card. The problem is, when I insstalled Mandrake selecting the ATI card as the default, I got a scrambled screen. The intel seems to work fine. How would I switch and what do I need to do.

*Note: this is my first day in Linux, but I'm a Windows expert. Kepp that in mind when answering. Thanks.

Cheers!

Did you disable the onboard card before you installed? Probably a good idea. If you already did, then during boot you should see a screeen that lets you choose how to boot. Choose "Failsafe". You should end up in a little console window. Log in as root, and then issue the command XFdrake and hit enter. You should then be able to choose which driver to use for your ATI, and trial and error may be the best course. You could also try google.com/linux and see which drivers other people have used successfully.

Hello. Thbaks for the swift response.

By "disable", do you mean in the BIOS? In my BIOS, I hvae 2 video options: PCI ad AGP. AGP is the old Intel, PCI is the radeon.

Cheers!

Yep, choose pci and see if that helps. Having 2 cards means you really need to make Linux see just one of them, or you get problems.

Ok, but that's exactly what happens. Linux sees both of them no matter what....only the Intel works :(

That's what I did in the BIOS.

Thanks.

Hmm, this is an interesting twist.

I just installed Mandrake 9.1, and it just comes up with a black screen, nothing, not even scrambled. The wierdest part is, even when I have my AGP Intel cr*p card disabled in the BIOS, Mandrake still detects it. Is there a way to configure the card through failsafe, or during the install.

Mind, I can't access the GUI at all right now, not even with my old card.

Please help.

Cheers!

Jack.

Hello.

I got my card working now. To those who are having problems with this card, set your setting to Xfree WITHOU 3D accel.

Thanks for the help.Unregistered

Hi
I have the same problem with a Radeon PCI and a onboard Intel 810
video card. But I WANT 3D HARDWARE on this thing. Anybody was
able to get 3D hardware going ????

Setup is : Mandrake 9.1 (Xfree4.3) Intel 810 (disable) Radeon 9000 pci
P3-866 396meg WD-40meg.

If you need more info just let me know.

Thank's .

Sorry, but I don't think that's possible. Probably a driver error. See if anyone else can come up with anything.

Cheers!

Why would that be. I can run 3D hardware on Windoze. There must
be a way. Anybody can help a newbie....

Bye.

Oh boy

I agree. It's hard to believe that something so simple as a plain old 32mb pci radeon can be such a headache. I also have said card, and I've been trying to get the damn thing to work in Mandrake since 8.0! Biggest problem being that in 8.0-9.0 you could choose the older 3.x Xserver without the 3d support, which worked fine. In 9.1, however, this isn't presented as an option at install. I'm assuming the 4.x server is being istalled, due to the fact that as soon as X tries to start, all I get is a blank screeen and tiny little HD accesses. No kernel panic, but to response to ctrl-alt-delete, either.

I would LOVE a solution to this problem. I would also greatly appreciate a way to get 3D support running.

BTW, MDK9.1 Is awesome, at least on this old Campaq deskpro I've commanderred from work.

I have the same problem with my old Radeon 7000 and an onboard intel i810 I get X to work with my i810 but without hardware aceleration. I think the problem is with DRI
