Exclamation Radeon 8500 HELP (please)

I have an ATI Radeon 8500 and have tried updating XFree86 (which never works, only makes it so I have to reinstall Linux). I have Mandrake 8.1 and XFree86 4.1.0 which is said to have support for Radeon. Sure, it SUPPORTS my card, but X runs slow as molasses. For example, when moving windows, u see a trail like when you would have a crappy card running Windows 95/98/2000/whatever. I can't stand it anymore!! I really wanna be able to play Return to Castle Wolfenstein on Linux, but If I can't even get the 2D to work, 3D is out of the picture. If anyone knows howto fix this, PLEASE TELL ME. Another helpful idea, if anyone knows, would be the seetings for another card that works with Radeon 8500 using XFree86. Right now, Linux finds my card as either an old 3Dlabs card or a generic crap card, which it is not.

Thanks for help in advance.

Argg, took so long to move down page on low resolution screen when scrolling lags with these crappy "drivers," lol.
