Quick question unknown symbol

I am trying to remaster knoppix. I have used the 'HOW TO'from but when i am trying to clean up using the following command :

COLUMNS=200 dpkg -l |grep ^rc |awk '{print $2} ' | xargs dpkg -P

I dont understand how to input the ^ sign from the keyboard. What do i press?
