Quick Debian Install/Partition Question
 

Hey Everyone!

I've been using Ubuntu for almost 2 years now, but I am still a newb, as the ease-of-use/GUI allowed me to remain lazy...so be gentoo...I mean gentle! :D

I want to install Debian(a stripped-down basic version that just contains the stuff I need/want). I only own one 'puter, which right now has Ubuntu and Vista on it. What I'd like to do, is wipe out the Vista (Haven't booted it up in over a year) and install Debian on the 78GB partition that it now occupies, while keeping my Ubuntu intact, until such time as I am comfortable with Deb and see that it is going to work for me. When installing Deb, will I be presented with an obvious GUI option for doing this...or am I going to have to know something and do some typing??? (I know, you may be saying "If you have to ask, you're not ready for Debian"-0 but hey, I gotta learn some time..and if i stay solely with Ubuntu, I'll never learn....)

Post the output of fdisk -l

When it comes to partitioning during the install choose the manual option and choose the Vista partition for Debian's / partition. You should be able to determine which partition it is by having a look at the size.

Basically, the installer tells you what it will do and offer you the choices, you just need to pick no need to know the command line stuff, and note what TobiSGD says about partitioning.

If you want to test the debian install beforehand, you can always use virtualbox and create a VM.
As I see it, the biggest issue would be grub. Check grub versions in advance.

You might want to keep Ubuntu grub at mbr, and install debian's own grub at the debian partition.

I've regressed in my Linux knowledge though- so if you don't mind: How do I see what version of Grub I have (I just updated my Ubuntu- first time since 2010)...and how do I knoiw what version of Grub my chosen Deb flavor will have? Am I looking for them both to be the same?
