Questions about device files

I'm just wondering

My Linux Distribution graciously put all my devices into a certain group.
All of the CD-Drives and Hard disks are in the group disks, and the floppy drives are (I think) in the group floppy because my drive, fd0, is in this group. The permissions for all of the things in the disks group and the floppy group are 660. With this information, does that mean that if I allow my users into these groups, they will be able to use these disks? Its a home computer and I trust the people that use the devices. I don't think they can mount these devices either because root owns them.

Also, what device files are linked to the serial and usb ports? If they are grouped similar to the disks and floppies, can I put my users in these groups as well?

Yes.

"what device files are linked to the serial and usb ports?"

The serial devices are /dev/ttyS*
(note that is a capital S, small s is something different)

The USB devices are /dev/usb/*
