question regarding gtk theme engines...

I understand that some gtk themes make use of a theme engine (e.g. pixmap) in order to draw buttons and sliders and other widgets.

Question: If you are running in some arbitrary window manager, fluxbox for example, is it necessary to explicitly invoke the theme engine or is this handled automatically by gtk? And is this the same for both gtk-1.2 and gtk-2.0 themes?
