Question for Knoppix users or exp.
 

I just burnt a copy of knoppix to play around with on my laptop it boots to the knoppix screen with the prompt "boot : " what do I do with that?
i tried the usual stuff but nothing?

knoppix lang=Yourlanguagecode

and enter?

You add in 'boot parameters' here, which can cause the system to configure itself in different ways. For example, if the hardware detection fails to identify something correctly you can add a boot parameter to fix things. Also if you have a laptop you may have to put in some info about the display size in pixels.

In knoppix circles they get referred to as 'cheatcodes'. Go to http://www.knoppix.net/docs and you will see the cheatcodes link near the top of the page.

thanx I got it working why is it that when I run it off my win xp box I can tell that it solely off the rom no hdd activity at all. but if I run it on my RH box the hdd is always being accessed and I noticed during startup on the RH box it said establishing /etc/fstab/ thats not going to screw up my current set up is it? also whys it using my hdd?

Knoppix looks for partitions on your HD and adds them to its own list in /etc/fstab (in the ramdisk, not the HD). The partions appear as icons on the knoppix desktop and you can mount them by right-clicking and selection 'mount'. I think the default is to mount them read-only, so you have to take deliberate action as root user to get any write permission to the HD.

I suppose it is possible it decided to use your RH swap file when it found it, which would cause some HD activity, especially if you are low on RAM.

Knoppix uses any /swap partitions it finds on the HD(s) to stop it from doing so use the noswap cheat code and will not use any other partitions unless you mount them yourself.
