question about swap

hello

i started using linux one month ago (suse 9.3 pro) and at the time i had 256mb ram (that's the recommended amount of memory). i put 512mb swap since most websites said a good amount of swap is 2*physical memory

recently i bought additional 512mb memory so right now i have a total of 768mb physical memory. now the questions:
1. should i increase the amount of swap to atleast 1gb?
2. i'm a normal home user so i can't seem to use up all my physical memory (application data never uses more than 30% of the total phys. memory). that's why my free swap space is always at 100%.. do i really need that much swap space? 1gb or even 512mb seem way too much

sorry if these questions are stupid. also i'm not from english speaking country so my english can be pretty bad :(

Im using suse 9.3 too.. iv got 512mb of ram and my swaps set at 100mb.. In my opinion 1Gb is way too much even with heavy use.. just leave it at 512mb.. its more than enough

Hello and Welcome to LQ!

the 2x physical ram is a hangover from the days of small ram. as a home user, 512 is probably all you need. There are no "linux police" who are going to bang down your door because you don't have 2x physical ram. :)

have fun in linux!
