Question about install linux on WinXP machine
Hi every, I need help with install linux on windowsXP machine. to be short, I use grub to dual boot system, but I can not boot Linux, it stopped with this line on screen:
ide0: at 0x1f0-0x1f7....... but this did not happen when I installed linux. what can I do? |
Option 1: Reinstall Linux. When Linux installs, it places
the first stage of GRUB into the boot sector of Windows. It may of become damaged by the sounds of things. (I am the voice of experience at damaging things) Later you will want to create rescue disks. Option 2: You may have to reinstall Win XP first, if option 1 doesn't work. Hopefully you have a newer copy of XP with the repair option available so you don' t have any data loss. (Windows has to be the first installed OS when dual booting.) Currently I am running SuSE 9.1 on two computers with Win XP..Installation on the laptop turned into something else. Fortunately I backed everything up before the first attempt . It cleaned Windows right off of the hard drive. It took more than one attempt and the help of Partition Magic to get it right. I used PM to format a section as a Linux partition and the install went right to it. The lesson from that is to watch what Linux is formatting on an install. |

E.G. you can install Windows on a primary hard disk, then make the disk a secondary unit after the initial installation. Then GRUB/Lilo can swap the HD hardware ID"s so that when you boot Windows it old drive can appear to be the PRIMARY IDE device (as if it were a master again..). Very nice. |
