Question About Downloading A Distribution

I am just curious to know how a distribution such as Slackware 14.1 (see ftp://ftp.slackware.com/pub/slackware/slackware-14.1/) is downloaded and an .iso file is created.

Do I have to download every single file and directory shown and then merge everything on a DVD as an .iso file, or what?

PS: I am well aware that Slackware is probably too difficult for a novice like me! I am just curious to know how it works since there is no .iso file posted on the site.

No, of course not. All distributions provide pre-made ISOs for download. But what you are looking at isn't where the ISOs are.

The preferred ISO distribution method for Slackware is to use Bittorrent. You can find the torrent files on the main site.

No, what you're looking at there is the package repository. If you go to the main page of the Slackware site and click "Get Slack", you will be offered options for downloading the installation .isos. Most other distros will offer similar links from their main pages.

First you are looking in the wrong directory, look inside ftp://ftp.slackware.com/pub/slackwar...ware-14.1-iso/. As suggested above, use a bittorrent client to download.

No it's not difficult to install. Just be careful with the disk partitioning part. Also when you are reading instruction/manual/guide, read them carefully and don't rush.

No, Slackware is not too difficult if you are willing to learn. It was my first distro as well.

Great info here: SlackDocs. It has a walkthrough of installation and also a section on how to get the new system configured.

Look at: Slackware 14.1 X86_32, X86_64 stable released. Torrents!

We encourage users to use torrents to relieve the loads on Slackware.com & mirrors. Once things start to settle after a new release then the ISO from one of the mirrors could be used. Please note that not all mirrors will provide Slackware ISO files;

Order the latest version of Slackware Linux on CD-ROM (6 CDs in all), or the whole distribution on a single DVD from The Slackware Store.
That way you support Slackware project.

Plus do not forget that Slackware forum is the official Slackware forum here at LQ.
