quad boot - couple of questions

i'm installing a quad boot system for my son on a notebook. i've got win xp as a first os with a 50 gb partition, and have fedora on a 25 gb partition with the hopes of putting suse and ubuntu (25 gb each) on the rest with a 4 gb swap drive to share between the three.
i'm no expert, but have discussed it with a guy at work and we think that it will be ok if they each have a mount point for the swap.
the thing i'm wondering now before i begin the 3d install, is do i just pop in the disc and run it like the fedora install? will that put a new grub over the one that's there now or just add an os choice?
i just got the others running for him last weekend and want to give him choices (he's 8) without messing up what i have set up.

You did not list the versions on the distros but I presume they are the latest releases. If so I would recommend doing the ubuntu last and there should be no problem with grub. If there is most repairs with the live cd are easy. The reason I recommend ubuntu last is it uses grub2 and will adapt to all files types.

Your partition setup should work well.

I agree with Larry, your partitions should be fine.

Your main issues will be the final boot loader config. Chainloading XP is easy but there are huge differences in how you configure grub vs. grub2. I'm assuming there's no encryption involved. You may want to test this config in a VM first.

4 os'es or more is a little different although you can have 4 primary paritions, windows usually makes 2 on install.

thanx all for the tips, especially the one about the ubuntu last. fedora is v12, ubuntu v11.04, and suse is v11.4(?). i figured to hell with testing, that's what the installs are for. i'm just stubborn like that. of course it did lead me to trash a laptop about a decade ago. i've got the fedora and suse done now, i'll get the ubuntu on this weekend. thanx again for the advice.

apparently i've spoken too soon, it seems that when i boot, it isn't showing fedora. i think i've inadvertantly overwritten it with suse. when i try to boot from the cd of fedora, it goes straight to the grub screen. getting late, i'll get it this weekend.

:D
Never a truer word was said .... lol

No real loss - you should have used F15 anyway. Be aware that if you have multiple system that use UUID for swap (like F15 and Ubuntu), only the last installed will boot as it will have changed the UUID (of swap) during the install.

Update: I was recently in another thread re Ubuntu not finding Fedora.Did you happen to use ext4 on Fedora ?.
From a Linux system, go here and do as it says, post the RESULTS.txt. Will give us a lot more info on your layout (nothing personal, just boot, partitions ...)
