python-apt : unresolved dependencies installing packages on Debian squeeze 6.04

I am trying to get off windows and replace with linux.
I don't know what to do with the following and would appreciate any help, thanks.
I have tried to install numerous packages such as GnuCash, Homebank and Skrooge on my Debian squeeze 6.04 system using the Software Centre. Everytime I try to install such a package, even ones provided by Debian I get the error message:
"Package dependencies cannot be resolved"
Under the Details tab there is one package listed: python-apt
When I open Synaptic Package Manager it shows python-apt 0.7.100.1+squeeze1 as installed and upgradeable.

This is getting really annoying, what does this error message mean and how do I fix it?

Thanks
Martin
