Putting folders on the desktop

In Ubuntu 10.10, when I try to drag and drop to the desktop my user folder in the home directory, I get an error message?:
Quote:
You cannot copy a folder into itself.
The destination folder is inside the source folder.
Do you know why I get this?

How can I place this icon on the desktop via terminal?

The error is very clear: "The destination folder is inside the source folder". You can't put the parent directory into its child - or the universe will implode.

On a serious note - you need to run gconf-editor and somewhere in Nautilus settings find a tickbox that says something like 'display home folder on the desktop'. Sorry, can't tell you more exactly - don't run Gnome any more and hate Gconf.

In the terminal run
gconf-editor

and then go to the path
/apps/nautilus/preferences/desktop_is_home_dir

see if it is set to true, and set it as you need.
