PulseAudio: Unable to connect: Protocol error

Hi,

When I try to watch a video with vlc or mplayer, I get errors and no audio. I can see the video images but there is no sound. However, I do have audio when watching a video from youtube, for example.

In mplayer I see:
Quote:
==========================================================================
Opening audio decoder: [ffmpeg] FFmpeg/libavcodec audio decoders
AUDIO: 44100 Hz, 2 ch, floatle, 117.0 kbit/4.15% (ratio: 14625->352800)
Selected audio codec: [ffaac] afm: ffmpeg (FFmpeg AAC (MPEG-2/MPEG-4 Audio))
==========================================================================
shm_open() failed: No such file or directory
AO: [pulse] Init failed: Protocol error
Failed to initialize audio driver 'pulse'
shm_open() failed: No such file or directory
[AO_ALSA] alsa-lib: pulse.c:243pulse_connect) PulseAudio: Unable to connect: Protocol error

[AO_ALSA] Playback open error: Connection refused
Failed to initialize audio driver 'alsa'
In VLC I see a popup message when the video starts playing which says:
Quote:
Audio output failed:
The audio device "default" could not be used:
Connection refused.
If I try to open pavucontrol, it doesn't open properly and I see repeated errors in the console:
Quote:
shm_open() failed: No such file or directory
shm_open() failed: No such file or directory
shm_open() failed: No such file or directory
Can anyone suggest what I should try to diagnose or fix this?
I did try uninstalling/reinstalling pulseaudio but that hasn't fixed it.
Thanks

It would be helpful to know what distribution you're using.
