Question ProSavage DDR XFree86 4.2.0 Problems

I have just installed Red Hat Advance Server on one of my machines and i am having major problems getting the configuration for the video card setup. The monitor that i have is a LG Flatron L1512s (LCD) and the video card is a S3 ProSavage DDR (32mb).

It seems to be having a lot of problems probing the video card, and when i have everything selected that i believe is correct the server fails to start.

I have gone to a couple of websites and one of the suggested things to try is to download the an updated driver from viaarena, would this work ?

Would it be worth trying to upgrade to 4.3.0? Would that solve the problem that i am having.

it doesnt recognize it at all. unfortunately the video card is built on to the motherboard. When i try to tell rh what the video card is and how much memory there is, the Xserve test fails.

this is what I did, hope it works for you:

1. download the driver from http://www.probo.com/timr/savage40.html

it contains a file named savage_drv.o
extract it to /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers

2. in text mode you do this in the command line

init 3
XFree86 -configure

this will create a file XF86Config.new

3. Replace the file /etc/X11/XF86Config with the XF86Config.new
example : cp XFree86Config.new /etc/X11/XF86Config

4. Start xwindows with
startx
