Proper way of updating installed packages

When I go to a TTY terminal
Code:
Ctrl Alt F1
I see a message saying there are xx number of packages to be updated.

So I assume I should go ahead and update...but how?

What distribution are you using? I'm guessing Ubuntu.

For ubuntu, from GUI you can use software updater or from CLI, apt.

For apt, the following line will likely do this.

Code:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

I update when I'm good and ready, regardless of if there are updates available. You don't really have to update just because there are updates available.
