Prolems getting mandrake 9.1 to boot.

I'm having trouble with mandrake 9.1. Basically it wont boot. I don't know what Ive done. Lilo (?) comes up but after that I get a blank screen. Using linux-nonfb and failsafe gives me alot of text then the error:

Kernal panic: VFS: unable to mount root fs on hda5

Ive tried to reinstall but I cant get madrake cd1 to work. The disk spins but nothing happens.

Linux should be on a 6gig partition on my main disk. Ive tried myself to fix it, but I think Ive just made things worse.

I'm also running windows 98SE.

Any help would be great.

(<- what a great smilie!)

the first cd for mandrake sometimes doesn't load right, but you can put in cd2 boot from there and then pop in cd1.
