in DOS, I always put programs in separate dirs so I can find them; when linux installs a program, where does it put them & do I have a say in where it goes?

Hi,

Linux File System section has several links to help understand the filesystem.

The GNU/Linux File Structure is a general overview.

At LDP: General overview of the Linux filesystem

Plus look at #2 below and other useful links;

1 Linux Documentation Project
2 Rute Tutorial & Exposition
3 Linux Command Guide
4 Bash Beginners Guide
5 Bash Reference Manual
6 Advanced Bash-Scripting Guide
7 Linux Newbie Admin Guide
8 LinuxSelfHelp
9 Utimate Linux Newbie Guide

The above links and others can be found at 'Slackware-Links'. More than just SlackwareŽ links!

The paradigm is quite different from other OSes here. The links someone posted above about the filesystem hierarchy standard will help you understand. I'll just let you know that all the files related to a program won't go into a single directory, but instead they spread across the filesystem, depending on their type and / or function.

Usually no, unless you do some manual work, not worth the trouble probably.
