Question ProFTPD passwords

I've recently moved over to SuSE Pro 7.2 Linux on my x86 Intel 750. I'm having trouble getting to grips with ProFTPD.

Could someone give me some info on how the passwords work in this program? The userguides leave me clueless and have 'fix-this' by them so I guess detailed info is pending.

I think I have to create authentication files somewhere?? Please let me know what on earth I'm supposed to do and give details of what goes into the config file.

Any help would be much appreciated!
