Proftpd Issue "Connection Refused"

Alright, i'm rather new to linux, but i wanted to set up my linuxbox as a server for my home network.

I set up proftpd as stated in the howto, and open it, but when i go to test by typing

#ftp localhost
i get a
Code:
ftp: connect: Connection Refused
i can't seem to find out why it won't allow a connection, but then again i'm a newb to all this. can anyone help me out?

-thx

No idea which how-to you followed, but a quite likely
cause would be that it's disabled in /etc/xinet.d/...

Another thing to look at would be /etc/hosts.allow and
/etc/hosts.deny

I followed the howto on this site:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ticle&artid=17
in hosts.allow and hosts.deny there's nothing but a description

Let's just say that MasterC's excellent document
seems to be geared at people who use distros that
compile things from source and manually set-up
the box (i.e. Slack or LFS) ... using it for a Mandrake
system was probably not the wisest choice.

I wouldn't know how to integrate what you want
into MDK from there.

Cheers,
Tink
