Unhappy Problems with X

Newbie on a Toshiba laptop running Mandrake 9.
Just installed, couldn't get the video settings to jive. So when I boot I go straight to CLI. When I enter 'startx' it comes back with (EE) No devices detected. Fatal server error: no screens found.

XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

With it being a new install I could reload but would like to correct from this point if I can.

To be more specific, I have looked at the xf86config (logged in as root) but I don't know how to change the settings. Sorry if the first post was vague.
