Problems with the 'Ubuntu Software'

Why can't I use any of the programs I install through 'Ubuntu Software'? For instance, I recently tried installing Notepad++ and it installed. So I clicked on it and then clicked launch and it attempts to launch but never succeeds. I click launch and the icon appears, blinks for a few moments, then goes away. This happens to every program I install through the 'Ubuntu Software' app.

Try opening it through a terminal and see if you get any error messages. If you do post them using CODE tags.

Let me give you an example with two programs: eclipse and a random program called discographer. Neither work from a launch so I tried launching them from the command prompt:

Code:

rob@server038:~$ eclipse
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM warning: ignoring option MaxPermSize=256m; support was removed in 8.0
rob@server038:~$ discographer
cannot create user data directory: /home/rob/snap/discographer/1: Permission denied
rob@server038:~$ sudo discographer
[sudo] password for rob:
mkdir: cannot create directory '/run/user/0': Permission denied
No protocol specified
rob@bserver038:~$

Also, this doesn't happen for the discographer but when I run 'eclipse' I get the following error message pop-up:

Code:

An error has occurred. See the log file
/home/server.com/rob/.eclipse/155965261/configuration/1532539685664.log.

Unless you post the log file for eclipse, it's hard to say what the "error" is.

It looks like the user account you're trying to run discographer under does not have write permission.

But when you try running it with root privileges, it still gives permission errors. You did enter the correct password for that user (rob), I take it?

I'm not following what you mean by "this doesn't happen for the discographer..." ?

It seems to me (at least for discographer) there's some strange permission setup/wrong permissions.

Has this always happened with your system?

Yes, I have never been able to download from 'Ubuntu Software'. Instead I have to do apt-get or install from source. What I meant by: "this doesn't happen for the discographer" is that when I run: eclipse, from the terminal an actual message box pops up with an error:

Code:

An error has occurred. See the log file
/home/rob/.eclipse/155965261/configuration/1532545929099.log.

Whereas, when I run discographer the only error was the one shown on the previous post.

Here is a copy of the log file:

Code:
