Problems with setting up internet connection and being "root"
Good evening everybody :)
I set up Free Mandriva Linux Spring 2oo7 on a free partition - and it works perfectly. But if you take a closer look, there are many problems I'm not able to solve. I'm using a DLink Wireless Router (Di-524UP) and the appendant USB adaptors. When I tried to install the connection, it says there is a *.bin file missing (rt73.bin), downloadable at a certain "serialmonkey" page. So I downloaded this pack (*.tar.gz), copied it onto the linux partition and tried copying the aforementioned file (rt73.bin) into the /bin/lib directory - but it says, I got no rights, and from this follows no access to this directory. So I tried it the only way I can suppose as a Linux Newbie: launching console, typing "su root", entering the password and was pleased being root. Somehow, this wasn't the right way, it told me the same shit again. So I tried joining the root account by aborting my session to see the login-screen again. I typed "root" into the loginname section and the root-passwort into the password section, but it said, that this is not possible. So my first question is - how do I enter root mode to copy this goddamn file into the directory? But this isn't all. The next problem I got is the screen resolution, which normally is 1600x1200 in WindowsXP mode, but just 1024x800 in Mandriva. In the control panel I didn't recognize any option to change that. So where do I do? It's something with xorg.cfg, isn't it? :) Greets from Germany, NapstoR |

In the Mandriva installation there is a possibility to set up a root passwort - which I did, but as you can see, there is no root user available in the login screen, but somehow it has to be there - otherwise the "su root" function wouldn't work, I suppose.

Is there really noone, who could help me? :(

Maybe you cannot log into the GUI as root. But you can in a terminal.
Press <CTRL><ALT><F1> to get a terminal login, login as root, do your stuff then logout. To return to your GUI do <CTRL><ALT><F7> Quote:
