Problems with red hat 9 and broadcom 4400 integreated ehternet adapter

I have a broadcom 4400 integrated ethernet hat doesn't seem to detect it so i downloaded the driver off the broadcom website. One of the requirements for the installing the driver was properly compiled kernel source tree. I didn't know what it was so i tried installing the driver anyway....when i tried making the driver file by using "make" it gave me an error saying source tree not found...i tried using the rpm file to install the driver and i got the same error....first what is a source tree? and second how do i by pass this problem or fix it....I really need to the enternet working with the red hat 9 so i don't have to log in to windows to get files off the net....i would gratefuly appreciate any help...thank you
