Question problems with lilo in a 2nd disk and 2 different SO

Hi,
I'm using two disks. In the first i have Windows XP and in the second I have Windows 2K.

Just I installed Linux red Hat 8 in the second disk in an old partition that I had made some time ago.

WXP is in hda1.
W2k is in hdb5.
Linux is in hdb3

The problem is now, LILO is not working fine. When I turn on the pc, I only see LI (The second-stage boot loader loaded, but could not run), and thje pc stop there.

I can start with LINUX, using a diskette.

This is my lilo.conf file

prompt
timeout=50
default=WindowsXP
boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
message=/boot/message
lba32

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.18-14
label=linux
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.18-14.img
read-only
append="hdc=ide-scsi root=LABEL=LINUX"

other=/dev/hda1
optional
label=WindowsXP

other=/dev/hdb5
optional
label=Windows2000srv

Somebody can help me to start mi pc from the Hard disk??

Best regards
Patricio

There are a few context errors in the file, unless you copied it by hand and left some things out:

All the label names should be in inverted commas (label="WindowsXP")
I'm not familiar with the "optional" line in the Windows entries. Is that commented out in the file?

As far as I know, the Linux entry should have the line "root=/dev/hdb3" instead of the "root=LABEL=LINUX" part of the append line

Do "cat /etc/lilo.conf" and post the results. Also, is lilo in the MBR or in the / partition?

Hi MDG,

the lilo.conf file is the same that I posted.

I changed "root=LABEL=LINUX" by "root=/dev/hdb3", but the problem is the same.

I'm not sure where is lilo. I think in mbr, butnI don't know.

Thanks
Patricio

Try changing the WindowsXP entry to:
Code:
other=/dev/hda1
label="WindowsXP"
Save and run lilo -v as root
