problems with installing drivers for GT 540 (Debian 8)

I installed crunchbang plus plus on this laptop since it was running poorly with windows. Everything went fine so I decided to install the drivers.
I followed the steps on the Debian wiki. At the end of the installation it said I should reboot to make the nouveau blacklist(I have no idea what this means). When I did it booted in the text mode. Obviously something somewhere went wrong. Because I am a super noob at Linux there must be some vital part that I missed or completely messed up.

I followed the steps on here for Debian 8 https://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers
I installed the legacy drivers and configured the xorg.conf automatic.
when I type startx(I think that's how you start the GUI mode) it gives me "no screens found" and in the logs there also is the "no devices found"
I have read the xorg wiki and have tried X -configure. That gives me "number of created screens does not match number of detected devices".
getting the logs here is kind of a pain, but if someone asks for it I'll try to post it.
