Problems with gnome

Dear all,

i updated my system (Fedora Core 3 Distribution) using Synaptic manager but when i reboot gnome doesn't start.
I get following error message: "theme starting problem [theme name] impossible recognizing the image format [file format png]"-(sorry for the bad translation)

This is not the first time that i face such a problem, it happened using fedora core 1, but i was able to fix it, in fact browsing around i found a solution: "/usr/bin/gtk-query-immodules-2.0 > /etc/gtk-2.0/gtk.immodules"
"/usr/bin/gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders > /etc/gtk-2.0/gdk-pixbuf.loaders"

The fact is that this time when i use the second command i get following error message"[png library]: undefined symbol: deflate"

I've tried to fix the problem re-installing libpng and libpng10 RPMs, but the situation has gone worst. Now when i use the console i get following error message: "INIT : ID "6" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes".
How can i solve?
