Problems with booting
Dear members of the forum,
I have some trouble booting from my flashdrive. I installed (via unetbootin) Backtrack5 on my USB stick. For some reason whenever I open my boot menu booting from an USB stick is not an option. The boot menu doesn't change whether my USB is plugged in or not.
At the moment I run Windows 7.
Thanks in advance!

Did you install Backtrack 5 on the flash using the same machine? If yes, then I guess you booted using your USB stick only to start the install. Is it? If booting from USB was available at the time then did you make any changes that made it go off?
Check your BIOS setting and see you have boot from USB option in there (ideally it should be if you booted using USB to install Backtrack)
Once the above queries are answered we can proceed to check problems with bootloader.

Last I checked, Dell machines require you hit the F12 key while booting up the computer to select a boot device other than the default which is usually the installed hard drive. Some HP machines require you hit the F10 key early in the boot process to select a custom boot device. You have to make sure the key is plugged in when booting the computer before hitting these keys to get a custom boot menu. Some machines require you boot into 'Settings, or BIOS' to set a custom boot order, in the boot priority section of the BIOS settings you should see your USB key in the list, probably down near the bootom after floppy, CD, and the installed hard drive, you would then use down arrow key to highlight your USB key, then either page up key or a F5 or F6 key to bring it up the list of priority devices so it's above the installed hard drive, then hit esc. key then F10 to save and exit, now it should boot the key.
EDIT: Some computers have the 'Boot from USB' option disabled in the BOOT section of BIOS settings, one would need to enable this feature for this option to show up in boot priority section or custom boot device menu.

If you have an older desktop it may not have an option to boot usb, then you need to chainload usb with a bootloader.

I do not want to keep BT5 installed on my computer. I just want to boot it from USB (as a portable distro)

Yes well that's the problem, booting from USB is not an option.

I'm not sure if I follow this. What queries are you talking about?

If you used unetbootin to make the iso image you will not see an option to boot when you plug the usb in. You need to shut off computer, plug usb then reboot computer. On reboot you will probably need to make sure your bios boot usb first in the boot order.
Second thing is I have never used unetbootin to make a usb distro but according to their web site they do not have a success story.
