Problems untar'ng files

This is what I get:

tar: This does not look like a tar archive
tar: Skipping to next header
tar: Archive contains obsolescent base-64 headers
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors
Im using Mandrake 9.2. Haven't been able to untar any files at all thus far due to this

consider ARK in KDE. it auto detects files and has support for most extensions. At same time as dopefish said, what is the filename (especially extension) and what are you using ... and if you used Mozilla to download it, check it's the full file size, because Moz doesn't append .part to partially downloaded files
