problems mounting a USB mp3 HD in SUSE 10.0

I've got an iRiver 20gig MP3 player that I'd like to mount, but nothing is working. I can't find the device to mount.

here is the output of /var/log/messages:

Code:

Oct 11 20:12:44 linux kernel: usb 5-3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 2
Any idea how I can mount "usb 5-3"? I was expecting to see a scsi drive.

It is likely a "Maybe Plays" or "Pray for sure device" using proprietary MTP firmware. If it can play protected content, it is not usable in Linux without a lot of work. Which model? I converted my 1 gig player to UMS using their firmware changer tool. Your message was what I saw the first time I plugged it into Linux.

This is the tool for the 512, 1 meg and 2 meg players.

on the global Iriver site, Iriver N.A. doesn't tell you you can change the firmware. Contact Iriver and ask for the exactly similar too; for your player and how to convert your player from MTP to UMS. NOTE: U will lose all current content on the player if you convert and won't be able to play any of your purchased content even if you back it up and reload it.

Another note: They may say you can't and try to stonewall you, but if they player is sold in Europe, it can be run as Universal Mass Storage.

This is a 20gig iRiver H10. The firmware update you posted doesn't seem to include this model.

Also, I really don't know what MTP and UMS are. Can you point me to a primer?

Thanks for the model. Here's the definition of MTP and UMS.

here's the link trying to explain why the US model is only MTP or supports "MaybePlays"

OK, I checked, the H10 is available as USB mass storage, so it is available. Contact Iriver and tell them you need to convert your H10 to UMS because you have a Mac, and they should be able to tell you how to do it. I believe that is done through the player itself, you simply convert it to UMS.

Here is a link to the H10 firware update tool, but I don't know if you can switch from MTP to UMS with it.

I updated the firmware, but wasn't able to switch to UMS. I've emailed iRiver, hoping that they can help me out. After the switch to UMS, hopefully it won't be too hard to mount the device.
