Problems installing openSUSE 10.1 from CDs

Hi- I have just obtained 5 CDs for SUSE and am trying to install them on an old PC that ran Windows ME (not attempting to keep Windows on here as I have it on a newer computer).

I am stuck when the computer reboots after installing CD1. I just don't have a clue how to progress onto CD2... if I put CD2 in whilst the computer is loading, it says load CD1. If I have no CD in the drive, a system error comes up.

On loading CD1 (after the reboot), I get a screen asking if I want to install or boot from the hard disk. Booting from the HD brings up an error message (I guess because the OS is not fully installed), but clicking "Install" recommences the whole install process from the beginning. I just can't find a way of getting the install process to move onto CD2; the discs don't have errors on them according to the disk check.

Sorry if this sounds a stupid question but I've spent 2 days struggling and also have never installed an OS by myself before- any help is much appreciated! Thank you.

I have not used SuSE 10 CD version, but all Linux installer are similar. It means that installation from cd2 should follow just after cd1, no reboot. Which kind of install have you choosen? A minimal install or a full one?

Hi Mara, thank you for your reply. There isn't a minimum or full installation choice, I chose to install the Gnome environment then added on various bits of optional software. The magazine that came with the discs said that there may be a couple reboots along the line, but doesn't explain how to get CD2 recognised!! This is confusing, especially if you say that normal installations don't require reboots during them!!!!!

SUSE 10.1 5cd install problems

Hi,

I would also be interested to see how this problem turns out as I also have the exact same problem. A 5 cd install askes for reboot after cd 1 is finished, upon reboot, i am asked to install again, or boot from hdd, if i choose hdd, i boot to winxp as I am intending to keep winxp and use dual boot.

If anyone can think of anything that may be helpful to either of us, please do not hesitate to come forward.

I'm looking for solution to this issue now, LinuxAlex, so if anything turns up I will post in here.

regards

Hi Optic, sorry for the delay in replying, only just checked this thread.

The way I finally managed to get around this problem (after a loooong play around) was as follows:

- Leave CD1 in the drive for the reboot
- Abort installation when the screen returns asking you to install (with language selection etc etc)
- It then says "Do you really want to abort", if you click yes then you'll get an error message that says system was not properly installed
- Put CD 2 in
- Under "Installation" -I think- select "Boot installed system"

Hope that this helps you, good luck! :)

Hey I had the same problem with Suse 10. What I did was simply keep cd1 in the cd-rom, wait for it to reload and go into the installation setup. Then just kinda run through the same things It had said previously and then it should go to cd2. Why it does that I dunno!! Its been a while too since I've installed suse 10. So the exact procedure that I just mentionned might be a little inaccurate. But just reload with cd1 and play it out till it asks you for cd2.

Ciao
