problems installing on old laptop

i can't seem to get X to work at all.
tried running xorgconfig with several different options for video cards and settings (vesa, vga, 16/8 bit) but it just goes to a black screen if it starts to work and stays there.

during startup it also pops up with a few errors here are some of them.

Code:

Starting system mesaage bus: /usr/bin/dbus-uuidgen --ensure ; /usr/bin/dbus-daemon -- system
/usr/share/fonts/TTF: failed to write to cache

/usr/share/fonts/Type1: failed to write cache
/usr/share/fonts/Speedo: failed to write cache
/usr/share/fonts/cyrillic: failed to write cache

also for some reason when i type adduser as root it doesn't do the automatic questions but says it is just a command with arguments.

slackware 12.0 unsure of system specs atm. but old and slow

It appears your computer does not have enough memory. You may need to choose a smaller distro. Find the specs on your computer, this will help you a lot in knowing what choices you have.

I am not familiar with Slackware, I am not sure. From what I have read I believe you can install Slack with command line only and if so can you install it. If it won't install you may have to find a different distro. You still have not listed the brand, model and specs on your computer.

Hello

You might try XUbuntu. It works great on my Compaq Evo N600c.

Bye
