Problems Installing Fedora Core 4 with Adaptec Scsi Card
 

I am having a problem upgrading my RedHat 9 Installation to Fedora Core 4. The install hangs when loading the SCSI drivers aic7xxxx and does not go any further. I have tried using noprobe and once again it hangs as soon as I pick the correct card and it tries to load the drivers.
I have a Adaptec AHA-2940 U/UW. It is a P3 700 Mhz server

I have tried various BIOS settings alls without success.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Now how long do you wait. Have you waited at least 2 minutes. Depending on the card and the devices attached it can take some time. I would make sure termination is correct. One thing that might help is if you are installing to a scsi drive is for now just have that drive plugged in. Remove any other devices to see if that speeds up the process.

I left it over night but it did not move. The hardware is not new I have had red hat 9 running on it for a couple of years without a problem. In addition the CD Rom is part of th SCSI set up and it recognises it enough to start the install and allow me to answer the initial set of questions. It only seems to hang at the screen saying Loading AIC7XXXX drivers.

That is the correct module for that controller. Have you tried booting with one of the latest Knoppix Live CD. See if it hangs with it.
Another thought is use just the scsi drive and an ide cdrom drive.

Seen some searches from http://www.google.com/linux and some mention the same issue. Seen no real good answer. Only one I did see says the person had to install to and ide drive then copied partitions over to the scsi drive.

Another one seen says the module is corrupt, works only with 39xxx series.

Seen one that says use the older module SCSI_AIC7XXX_OLD.

Probalby the only other thought I would try is either install to an ide drive or find someone with still the default kernel. Copy the module from thier system and add it into the ISO.

I try using the old AICx7xxxx driver first and then replace the SCSI CDrom with an IDE version.

When I ran FC4 I didn't have any problems with my 2940 card at all. Do you have boot from SCSI device set in your Bios? If you do, shut it off and try that. I didn't need any special instruction at all when I loaded mine with the SCSI boot option turned off. Good Luck.

I could not get Fedora Core 4 to work. It just would not move past loading AICX7xxx SCSI driver. Loading the old version did not seem to work either as it did not recognise the SCSI drives.
Fedora core 3 worked just fine however and that is the version I am now running.

I will give it another go sometime but having spent over a week on this I will settle for FC3 for the time being.
