Problems Hibernating

I'm having trouble hibernating and suspending. I have an DELL inspiron 6400 laptop with 1 gig of ram and 1 gigs of swap, so i should be ok for hibernation. However, when i click hibernate, it just goes to a black screen and suspends, and i end up having to hard-restart.

Any suggestions would be awesome!

What distro and version are you using?
If you open and close the lid on your laptop, does the display back light turn off and upon opening come back on?
