problems booting livediscs: mepis,slax,bailisk

Hello,

I'm completely new to this and want to start with live discs. My problem is, I can't get any of them to boot properly.

Simply Mepis: proceeds through some start menus, then sticks on a scrolling "signal detected again" message,

Slax: gets stuck on "Activating hardware detection:/etc/rc.d/rc.hotplug start"

Basilisk: sticks on a blue screen with the cursor scrolling dots, left to right, down the screen

Any ideas why none of these are working?

thanks,

BL

Hi and welcome to LQ. What are the hardware specifications of your computer?

Thank you.

It's a pentium 4 1.6ghz with 256 ram, running win xp. 40 gig hard drive. I think I this computer may be low on ram; I got an old compaq armada laptop with a p2 and win 95 from my step-dad yesterday and have already gotten basilisk and slax discs to load.

Yes it could be a problem with the ram. 256 megs is the minimum for some of the light live discs. Those that contain KDE or GNOME may need more ram.

Cool then; it's actually just as well, as now I can dedicate this old laptop as a linux machine, and learn without worrying about destroying something important.

So I'll be posting on the boards of whatever distro I go with, I'm sure.
