problems after upgrading to MD2006

Hello people. I'm as new to linux as a virgin is to the lower parts of a woman, so forgive me if my questions seem very stupid.

I have for a couple of weeks had Mandriva 10.1 installed on my Laptop. So far it has been going well, i love to mess around with it while taking breaks from my homework.

Now a couple of days ago i downloaded and upgraded to Mandriva 2006. After installing the auto login has stopped, and i now have to enter name and paswd every time.

i have tried to choose "enable automatic login" under the control center->Boot->enable auto login...
But every time i restart linux it wants me to enter user name and password again.

Another thing is that when attempting to logout of kde i am only given the option to end current session. There is no option to restart or shut down the computer.

The last thing i have noticed doesn't work properly after i upgraded is when i start the Xterm i get the following msg "Cannot set LC_ALL to default locale: No such file or directory"

I hope you people here can give me some advices on what to do, and forgive me my horrible English :)

/cheers - Soren

Those problems don't sound too bad - updates are notorious for causing bugs and problems. I'd say to solve them try creating a new user and logging in as that user. Now try those 2 things (BTW does the LC_ALL thing happen when using Konsole? - you might find it nicer to use) when logged in as the new user and see if you can get it to work. If you can then you probably just need to delete (or move) some of the . directories in your home directory.

Same Problem

I am having the same problem with shutting the machine down. The only button I see is to End the Session, which I do. Then I wait till I get the main logon page and power down. However, when I boot up, it tells me that my shutdown was not clean. Can anyone explain this?

Yes I'm still having the same problems. I tried posting a thread under laptops but all the bugzilla reports i was given where linking to another problem with shutting down.

The problem is that the laptop freezes before getting to unmounting the drives.

Although I'm not able to shut down cleanly, i can still press the power button and do a clean system halt.

Mandriva is using his own startup manager to manage the way you log on your system. Currently, it looks like your connection manager has been changed to KDE kdm connection manager. In your drakconf, go to the System tab and select Connection Manager. Make sure that you choose mdkKDM instead of KDM or XDM. This should solve your problem after a restart.

Good luck!

Thanks so much!

It sounds like that is the problem
When entering the connection manager i am only given the choice between:
KDM, GDM and XDM. There is not any choice saying something like "mdkKDM"
Could it be that the package is not installed?

mdkKDM does not exist

Yeah, I found that too. I don't have the option of mdkKDM.

thank you Zak.
For some reason MDK KDM was not installed. after installing it and using it the problem does seem to occur less. But it still happens that it freezes at "stopping laptop mode"

Other times i get a long list of error messages. i don't know if anyone knows what log these messages are stored in and if it gives any meaning posting them here.

but thank you for the help- a

Take a look at /var/log/messages for the softwares or type a dmesg for the hardware problems.

Good luck!
