Problems after installation
 

Hello,

I am trying to install ubuntu on to a 2nd HDD. The HDD was formatted first and I downloaded and installed ubuntu through the wubi downloader.

When it asked me to reboot I done so, then chose ubuntu from the list. It started loading, shown the word ubuntu in the big letters it does with the orange loading bar then nothing happened. My monitor said No Input Signal. I have left it for a good few minutes to make sure it wasnt loading something in the back ground but nothing happened. Any one know the problem?

My PC specs are AMD Phenom 2 920, ATI HD 4850, 4GB RAM, one 320GB HDD with Vista Business installed and one 80GB HDD which I tried to instal linux on to. Ive got some DFI Lan party mobo. Cant remember the exact model off the top of my head. If you need to know I'll find out.

I tried to install ubuntu from a CD a while ago and remember getting the same result.

uhm.. is your monitor cable plugged in properly . check if there is any sort of loose contact
cause the error "My monitor said No Input Signal" means that it stopped getting signal .. which most cases because the monitor isnt plugged in properly to CPU

The monitor is in properly. I have no problems when I load Vista, so there is no loose connections or anything.

during live cd did it work properly .. try doing disk checksum to see if there are any errors in the cd

Ubuntu-8.10 will not install fglrx by default.
you may need to do it

use the recovery mode and fix x-server: try radeon or vesa

I didnt use a CD. I used wubi from the ubuntu site. It downloaded ubunut while I was still on Vista and installed it to the second HDD. Im downloading a CD now to see if it works that way or not. Ive got Ubuntu 7.04 on CD here so I might give that a go first.

Go for 8.10, 7.04 is too old. You can update 8.10 to 9.04 (will have long term support)

check ur 2nd hdd..does it work fine??

@armani...long time supports are released every two years,so after 8.04 it will be 10.04 and not 9.04...

In order to help you we are going to need more info than you supplied.

I'm going to assume Grub was installed as the boot loader. So as soon as the menu pops up use the down arrow key to stop the timer. Carefully read the directions below the menu. Should say something like type "e" for edit then "b" for boot. Go ahead a hit the "e" key this will bring up the info on how Ubuntu is booted. Scroll to the end of the line and remove the words 'quit' and 'splash' when done hit the "b" key to boot.

Watch what happens and report back any errors.

There was no way to edit anything or boot anything by pressing b or e. I managed to boot in safe mode though and then got this error:

NTFS partition is unclean.

shutdown properly, please run "chkdsk /r" from windows and once that is fixed you should be able to resume instalation.

format your 2nd hdd....download an iso from the net,burn it and do a clean install....i don't think you will have any problem...
