Problems accessing non-encrypted websites

Ok, my husband is a techie, and he is having major heartburn with this:

He is running Open SUSE 11 on a Toshiba M115 and has complete access to our intranet without any problems, but when he tries to access any non-encrypted web pages he gets "Cannot find the Server at..." he has tried multiple different websites to no avail(yahoo, google, any other search website, nothing). He can access to ABC.com and Linux.com, but nothing else..

Any ideas on what our problem could be? He has looked into internet settings, changed firewalls, turned off firewalls, turned off proxies.

We are at a dead stop.. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did it ever work correctly?

mystic_firefae 10-21-2009 04:39 PM

No, he has tried three different browsers and they are all doing it. he thinks its gonna be something simple, that's why he's not getting it. lol. any ideas would be appreciated. We are going on Day 3 of this problem and He has reinstalled the Open SUSE twice.

Update: He got it to work ONCE, within 20 min it stopped working.. He thinks its a setting that he is looking right at, but can't see. Any help wound be greatly appreciated!

Is this just web browing, does it effect ping as well.

Can he ping google.com, yahoo.com or even linuxquestions.org? If no, can he ping the ips 74.125.45.100, 69.147.114.224 and 75.126.162.205?

When you say "nothing" what does that mean? Does the browser come back with a "site cannot be found error" or anything like that? Does the browser spin forever and never return a response?

Are other systems on your intranet able to get to the internet etc successfully?

The Error he gets is "Cannot find the Server at...". What I find strange is he goes to frys.com and the words show up, but none of the images or hyperlinks show up. Its almost like if a website is not encrypted that system will not see it. None of the other computers are having this problem.

He can't "ping" Google, its almost like non encrypted websites are completely blocked. He can visit .org websites, sometimes, but when he tries to go into any offshoot of that site, like the forums gallery, it doesn't work.

the First IP sends him to google english homepage, if he attempts to ping the url, it doesn't work, and the IP addresses are sending him to web pages

the sencond IP returns m.www.yahoo.com "cannot locate remote server"

the 3rd http://www.linuxquestions.org\no errors

Quote:

If I am to understand this, you mean he can get to the pages via IP, but not via URL. This is what I expecting to see, if it is then the DNS settings are likely invalid. As repo said, if you can put the content of /etc/resolv.conf here. Also could you confirm if you have a router and if so, it's internal IP to the network with the content of /etc/resolv.conf.

Thank you, I will tell him to try those and let you know what happens :-)
