Problem with WiFi Dell E1505 Laptop

My E1505 works fine with Vista and with Ubuntu Linux, but not with Mint 10.

The wireless radio is disabled and the usual key combo (Fn-F2) that toggles the radio on and off does nothing under Mint 10. (It worked fine under Vista and works fine under Ubuntu.)

What can I do?

My first guess is that the box has a Broadcom wireless chip (Dell seems to like Broadcom) and that Ubuntu installed the Broadcom drivers and Mint did not. The Broadcom drivers are in the Ubuntu repos in the "Proprietary Drivers for Devices (restricted)" section; that section is not enabled by default.

In Ubuntu or Windows check to see what kind of wireless chip you have.

Alternatively, in Mint, you can open a terminal and run lspci or dmesg and inspect the output for that information. See man lspci and man dmesg for more.

It does have a broadcom chip but the package manager says that the Broadcom stuff **is** installed.
