I'm new to slackware (14) and trying to get it without asking too many questions, but I'm stumped on this one.
When my laptop boots, everything goes well until (what seems to be) the ititiation of the video driver. Sometimes
the screen goes totally black , sometimes the backlight on the display will stay on, and sometimes it will boot
perfectly. Even if there is no video output the machine boots properly (I have NetManager starting from rc.local,
so I know the boot completes.) Similar behavior is exhibited when trying to recover from sleep mode.I think I've
learned enough to provide some useful information that may assist solving this problem.

first of all welcome to the forums.

From what you have posted, it looks like there is an issue with the drivers or with KMS. Have you attempted to boot the system with the "nomodeset" option, to see if this fixes the issue? It will basically disable your GPU driver and will start the system with a very basic default driver. If this works, then you have a hint, that the issue is with the current driver.

You could also try updating to the latest drivers or - if you are using the proprietary drivers - try using the open source drivers. If you are using the open source drivers now, you could try using the proprietary drivers.

I am not using Slackware, never did, so I have no information about the specific files you could edit or of packages to download.
