problem with sound-related stuff (Debian)
Alrigh, so here's the problem:
when opening xmms or any other app that uses sounds i get: Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server Xlib: Client is not authorized to connect to Server ** CRITICAL **: Unable to open display ------------------------------------------------------ Now, i had booted my comp only once after install. Before the first boot i hadn't even tried anything. After that sounds refused to work for me as a normal user, and after the second boot i started to get that as a root when using xmms, mplayer, xine or dc_gui (wich apparently uses a sound port too...). So, does aneone have any other solution except reinstalling for me? (i can do that but i'd need to conf x again and i'm not sure wether my friend would be patient enough to help me with it... last time he did it trough ssh and had a few difficulities with it... And my distro is Debian, soundcard is SB Live! ... is there something more you'd need to know? Well, I hope that'll do... |
Welcome to LQ.
Ok, if you re-install, you won't need to conf things again...so long as you keep backup copies of the conf files somewhere safe, like a floppy disk. You've got an SBLive!, try typing (in a console/terminal session) modprobe emu10k1 before anything - just to make sure that the correct sound modules/drivers are installed. |
Hmm.... It would appear that i don't have them installed... atleast modprobe returns no answer... I am certain that i did install them in the debian install, they couldn't of have just disappeared, could've they?

ok, problem solved, the prob was in x rights...
if someone has the same prob tell them to do this: export XAUTHORITY=/home/<USER_RUNNING_X>/.Xauthority (replace <USER_RUNNING_X> with username running x =) ) and then to put export XAUTHORITY=/home/$USER/.Xauthority into /etc/profile |
